Kindle is a quiet and curious 3-year-old basset. She loves her calm life with her foster family, but trauma from her previous life in Kentucky makes her extra cautious around new people, keeping a close eye and a wide berth. Progress is slow, but new milestones are being reached weekly.
When it’s just her and her foster family, Kindle is full of love, affection and a big personality. She’s most content snoozing on the couch or better yet, snoozing on her person. Kindle loves belly rubs and is a frequent self-back scratcher, which is as entertaining as it must be satisfying. She loves her foster brother Zero, and they happily share toys, treats and beds. She would love to join a home with another dog who can show her the ropes and make her feel comfortable.
She loves car rides and walks, and is a pleasure on the leash, keeping a good pace without pulling. Squirrels and cats don’t seem to rile her up. She is very food motivated and will do almost anything for Costco’s chicken jerky treats. She is comfortable in her crate, and will happily put herself to bed or tuck away when she’s not feeling social. She is trustworthy in the house and has free range. She’s never destroyed anything or gotten into trouble while alone.
Potty training is good for the most part, but inconsistent. She knows to go outside when let out, but will occasionally go in the house in 1 of 3 specific spots. To avoid this, she is put in her crate when left alone for more than 2 hours.
As her foster parents for the past 6 months, we know a completely different dog than the one everyone else meets. To a new person, Kindle is a ball of nerves, anxiously pacing until she calms down enough to sit on the couch, but not without sight of a clear getaway. To us, she is hilarious, affectionate, lazy and cuddly. Her eyes express so much love, and her tail shows how happy she is to be loved.
The road to achieving this companionship will be a challenge, but the payoff will be immense to whoever is patient and kind enough to earn it. From the dog that I know, Kindle truly is a 10/10. You just need to earn her trust to see it.
