Meet Abby – The Sweet Senior Basset Hound Looking for Her Forever Couch!
Say hello to Abby (she doesn’t answer to Abigail, but lights up for “Abby”!), a 10-year-old female Basset Hound. On the smaller side for the breed, she packs all the classic Basset features we adore: those impossibly long, velvety ears that drag the floor, soulful droopy eyes that could melt ice, short legs, heavy-boned build, and that signature laid-back hound swagger.
Abby came to us a bit unsure at first, but she’s blossoming into the ultimate house hound. She’s making fantastic progress on leash walks—getting better every day—and while the doorway transition (in to out and back in) still freaks her out a little more than the actual walking, she’s handling it like a champ with patience and encouragement.
House training? She’s nailing it. Few to no accidents on many days, and she’s super food-motivated, which makes positive reinforcement training a breeze. You’ve never seen a happier dog than Abby when she knows a treat is coming—her whole face lights up, tail wags furiously, and she practically dances in place. Not picky at all, she happily eats her dog food and loves the routine.
This girl is all about the love: she craves attention, pets, and especially belly rubs. She’s completely comfortable with handling—touch her feet, check her teeth, no problem. She’s gentle and easygoing with people and other dogs (she’s been hanging out great with my other hound). Cats are unknown territory, but given her chill vibe, I don’t see it being an issue in a calm home.
Her favorite part of the day? Claiming her special chair for epic daytime naps. She even follows her foster dad into the shop to keep him company—true velcro hound style. The first few days she had a habit of waking the house with her classic Basset howl between 6-7 AM, but the last few nights she’s slept in the bed with her foster dad and the other dog in the house… and oh my gosh, the difference! She wakes up extremely happy, full of gratitude, giving the sweetest hugs like she’s saying “thank you for spoiling me.” Those mornings are pure joy.
At 10 years young, Abby is the perfect low-energy companion for someone who wants a devoted, affectionate shadow. She thrives on routine, short leisurely walks (sniffing is her favorite sport), cozy spots, and plenty of love—no marathons or high-octane play needed. She’s already showing what a loyal, grateful sweetheart she is once she feels secure.
If you’re looking for a gentle, goofy, endlessly endearing senior Basset who will reward every treat, belly rub, and cozy bed spot with pure devotion (and maybe the occasional dramatic hound song), Abby could be your perfect match.
il is doing really good in her foster home! House training is going pretty good, even gives signals when she needs to go. She’s not bad on the leash and VERY treat motivated She found her favorite chair to lay in, seems comfortable in her surroundings and with another hound.
