Puppy Mill Bassets make the Journey

In November 2009, ABC Basset Hound Rescue agreed to help rescues in Missouri and Iowa take in 34 basset hounds from puppy mills. The dogs came to NY in 3 separate van trips. We've had enormous success adopting most of the dogs out, however, a few are still looking for their forever homes.

ABCBHR has spent over $6,000 so far on these 34 bassets between vet care and kenneling costs. Please consider making a tax-deductible year end donation to ABC Basset Hound Rescue. 100% of your money goes to helping the dogs.

Please watch the video of their journey, from beginning to happy ending.

In Loving Memory of Abe

Abraham 9/18/08 - 12/15/09

Abraham was one of the 34 puppy mill dogs that ABCBHR offered to help. He, along with a brother Bradley and 2 sisters (Olivia & Madison), were unable to be sold by the puppy miller that bred them. Abraham and his siblings sat in a pen in Iowa for a year. They had very little human contact and Bradley and Abraham were extremely afraid of people. When they were picked up to come to NY, the 4 were considered an extreme flight risk because they were so scared. They had to be handled very carefully.

Abraham and Bradley needed much more than the boarding kennel could offer, so they were placed in foster homes. Abraham consistenly barked the first night at his foster home. Another foster home offered their home for Abraham. Unfortunately, on a potty break, he broke free from the volunteer and ran away, leash and all. Being so scared, we didn't know if he'd ever be found. Fortunately, he was found at a gas station several hours later and returned to his foster home.

Twenty-four hours later, Abraham started having labored breathing and coughing up blood. He was taken to the emergency vet and put on oxygen and IV's. His breathing became extremely labored and the bleeding could not be stopped. The vet suspects internal injuries, perhaps he was hit by a car the night before when he was running free. It was at that time, the extremely difficult decion was made to send Abraham to the Rainbow Bridge.

Abraham---may you play and be free of any pain. We will see you again when we cross the bridge. Rest in Peace sweet Abraham.

Featured Basset

Bradley

Bradley spent several weeks in foster care, but unfortunately has returned to the kennel due to fear aggression. When cornered and frightened, he will growl and occasionally nip but has not broken skin. Bradley needs a very special adoptive home that can continue to work with him to overcome his fear of people. He loves and is comforted by the presence of other dogs, so he will not be placed as an only dog. He also can not be with young children as their fast movements can make him very frightened. Bradley does much better with females than with males, but would overcome his fear of men with a very patient person willing to take lots of time to help him. He will need to be in a home with a well fenced yard to keep him safe. Please e-mail our adoption coordinator (and submit an application) if you feel you have the time and patience for this special boy.
